SEVILLA - GUILLENA
22,4 km 5h30 + 2 breaks of 30 min
Up earlyish; breakfast at 7h30 and off at 8h30. It was already quite warm. We made our way to the Puente Isabel II which is also called the Triana bridge since it links
to Sevilla the old gypsie quarters. From there a lot of typical flamenco music and danse originated. It was also home to sailors before the decline of Sevilla's port.
A lot of photos were taken since this was the start of our walk on the Via de la Plata - in front of our hotel, under a Jacaranda tree, the first tile with the shell of St James........
Then we lost the yellow arrows and walked for a long time along a busy road through Camas and to Santiponce where we had our first break - lovely fresh orange juice.
On again along the busy main street where the trees all along were orange trees! We did not stop to visit the ruins of Italica, a roman town where the emperors Trajan (AD 53) and Hadrian (AD76) were born - too hot.

And we still had to follow a long and busy road, partly through delapidated and abandoned warehouses and across a system of flyovers until we finally reached the beginning of a roman road, straight as far into the distance as the eye could see!
It was very hot by then and I opened my magic umbrella and took off my hat. This road took us all the way to Guillana almost 9 km straight following the topography as roman roads do - up and down and up again and in every dip it was as hot as in a furnace - I felt my brain was sizzling when we stopped to have look at the guide book. But on top of each bump there was a nice little breeze.
The odd car or tractor overtook us or going the oposite. One cyclist wishef us "Buen camino!"
Then suddenly we were overtaken by a cyclist who then turned round towards us and we saw he was filming with a small handheld camera "Wouldn't it be nice if there were trees along this piste!" he said "and some places where pilgrims like you could find some water".
"The politicos should do something about it! For the poor suffering pilgrims!" - " Would you mind saying something like that while I film you? Where are you from? England and France?"
So he started interwiewing us in this way to put it on YouTube! I got all tangled with Portuguese in my usual way. He explained where he was from and what to look for on YouTube (we did not understand) - a few more photos and off he went.
And on we went as it was getting hotter and hotter - being very nearly there, we wanted to arrive rather than having another pause - especially since Andrea had read somewhere that the peak temperature was in the late afternoon. So we pushed on until I could take no more! We WERE very nearly, but I needed a rest. Fortunately there were a few trees and bushes in flower which gave some welcome shade. I had a short sieste, a bite to eat and life was good again.
Off to go out for a meal now and bed early in order to get out earlier tomorrow. Breakfast in this place starts at 6h30.
