DAY 1- Reçu ce dimanche soir

Day 1          Granja de Moreruela  -  Benavente     Saturday, 11/06/2016

26 km, mostly flat except coming into villages or finally Benavente – they all seem to be built on the rare hills in the vastness of the flat

Sunny all day

Coming out of Granja I got lost immediately because no arrow was to be seen after the split where Santiago is indicated due west and Astorga due north. Found the way out of town  and then it was straight tracks mostly in parallel, but a good distance to, the N 630, so that you could comfortably ignore it.  At one point I came to a power line with a series of pylons on each of which a stork family had settled – as far as you could see the pylons in the distance you could make out the nests. Not so easy to see on the photograph.

Since this was my first day of walking I had decided on a short stage, only 16.5 km to Barcial del Barco, where there was an albergue. I came close to the village just before midday and there was a beautiful patch of shade on the track just right for a picnic and a siesta, so I had both and at about  2 o’clock found myself in front of the albergue. It was not open;  I would have had to telephone to have it opened, so I went to look for a bar first. The bar was open, but nobody was about, no customer, no landlord. Even shouting did not produce anybody. I later heard that this bar also doubled as an albergue! Well!

So I continued walking. By then I had decided that it was too early to halt for the day and as there was another bar just at the edge of the village I stopped for a coffee rather than a beer and went on my way. Very soon I had the option – not official – to go on the disused train track which would be a short cut rather than to follow the yellow arrows to Benavente. I had been warned that the train track was overgrown in places, but not in the beginning when you come to it. However the rails had been removed and the sleepers as well; just the loose stones were left – impossible to walk on, for me anyway! So I followed the arrows, eventually leading on to a very long motorway bridge over the river Esla, down the embankment the other side and a long way back to go under the motorway on the road to Benavente.

A long way through the industrial outskirts into the town centre up on the hill. Half way up into a bar for a beer – by then I was beginning to feel the heat and the length of the stage. “The albergue? You go either up over the top and down the other side to the old railway station where you find the albergue or you stay on this level and go round the hill which however is considerably longer.”  Refreshed by my beer I went over the top, steeply up and steeply down. The railway line runs along the river and the whole station area has been turned into a park, nicely green and cool and fresh.

However when I got to the entrance door there was a sign saying: “The keys to the albergue can be had in the Tourist Office which is open until 20:30h.”  This was only 18h. So I went back, steeply up to the town centre. There was a fête going on with stalls all over the main square, lots of people about, music, food. And when at last I arrived at the tourist office, I was heartily tired of going anywhere. And instead of asking for the keys to the albergue I asked for a hotel in the centre. Got one, settled in, had some tapas in their restaurant and off to bed and to sleep!

PS to Day 1

I forgot to mention Dona Maria-Isabel. There were three men working in a small field, one with a tractor and two were hewing away. And this little woman was arriving to bring them their lunch. In the garden next to this field was a building which looked like a chapel to me; so I asked the woman - no, not a chapel, but dovecote(?). Here is the ruin of another one where you can see the holes which were made for nesting. This was Dona Maria-Isabel, 77 years old. I would not have thought so......

Departure:     Lannion - Granja de Moreruela    Thursday/ Friday  09 and 10/06/2016

Sunny weather most of the day and quite hot. Cloudy this evening with a light breeze - lovely!

No kilometres walked.......

Riton took me to Lannion train station at 15:30h to catch the train to Rennes at 16h. The strike meant fewer trains and therefore two hours wait at the bus station to catch the Eurolines bus to Valladolid which arrived at 11am the following morning. Caught the local bus to Zamora immediately. A bit of sightseeing and a good meal; and a taxi then took me to Granja.

In Granja I had a reservation in a Casa Rural, but when I used the knocker on the huge door nothing happened. This was 3 pm - siesta time in Spain. I did not want to wake up the whole neighbourhood and was just contemplating sitting down in the street on my wonder cushion in the shadow against the wall of a house when round the corner came a lady I thought I knew - we walked together two years ago, didn't we?! She had forgotten my first name and I had forgotten hers, Jenny from New Zealand. Family names we had never ecchanged, no addresses either. No contact all this time!

So instead of sitting on the cushion we went to a bar and had a chat over a nice cold beer.

I had forgotten  -  next to my computer  -  the planning of my stages with the few reservations I had made. My sister e-mailed them to me, so I could call the number of this casa rural and within minutes a young woman arrived on a bicycle and showed me in. A key for my room and a key for the heavy gate. The formalities dealt with she left again.

As I was settling in there was a knock on the gate - two men in rambling gear who looked rather sweaty. As I knew that there was nobody to receive them I opened my window and offered to give the woman a call. So they too are settled in now. They are Belge, from Flanders I suppose because they prefer to speak German or English with me rather than French. They have done a good number of the caminos. They are now going to do the camino del invierno which goes south from Ponferrada to follow the river - which river I do not know, have to look it up.....

And as I was sitting in the bar with Jenny a Canadian/French couple arrived, still in their walking gear. Jenny has crossed them several times - they are doing the same parcours I intend to do......

For my evening meal I finished the sandwich I had bought for breakfast plus a tin of lentils which I love and Riton does not eat, so we never have them. Bought some yoghurts and an apple and a banana for breakfast. Am curious to see whether at last I will succeed in carrying less food about with me....

Départ :     Lannion - Granja de Moreruela    Jeudi/vendredi  09 and 10/06/2016

2016 VdlP and CAMINO SAN SALVADOR

NEW WALK - JUNE 2016

Hello!
Here I am off again!  In 2014 and 2015 I did the walk to Santiago on what is commonly called the Via de la Plata. But the ancient Roman road of this name did not go to Santiago – it went straight north from Seville all the way to Gijon on the coast of Asturias. As Santiago is not situated on the Roman road the pilgrims starting from Seville either left it at the village of Granja de Moreruela, just north of Zamora, and went  on the Camino Sanabres which goes to Santiago via Ourense or continued to Astorga and from there took the Camino Francés to Santiago.

Since originally the Roman road was the best for its time and above all the only one which crossed the Cordillera Cantábrica, it was modernised over time, each time employing the latest technology, until it became a National road or even a motorway! So the Roman road was lost north of Astorga whereas in the south it still exists in large parts and the name Via de la Plata is applied to the pilgrim route going from Seville to Santiago via Ourense or up to Astorga.

A few years ago, in the wake of the popularity of the walks to Santiago and rambling generally, the towns along the way between Astorga and Gijon got together to resuscitate what they call the Ruta de la Plata or GR100. It coincides with the Via de la Plata between Seville and Astorga; between Astorga and León it coincides with the Camino Francés (against the “flow”); between León and Oviedo is coincides with the Camino del Salvador and finally between Oviedo and Gijon it coincides with nothing and is simply the Ruta de la Plata.

So I will start from Granja de Moreruela, north of Zamora, where last year I left to follow the Via de la Plata via Ourense, and will continue to Astorga, León and Oviedo as described above. And since between Oviedo and Gijon the landscape is flat with a lot of industrial sites I will stop at Oviedo where the Cathedral San Salvador is the end of the Camino del Salvador. There is a saying “Quien va a Santiago y no a Salvador, visita al criado y no al Señor” – he who goes to Santiago and not to Salvador visits the servant and not the master.

This will take 16 days of walking and 267 km – often very short stages crossing the Cordillera with great differences in height. My daughters will walk with me for the last four days.

**********

Bonjour!

Last entry--- Final

Conclusion - Final entry for this year

To sign off this year's walk, as before, some random thoughts as they come to me.

Again this walk has been a huge morale booster - the fact that I was able to do it, both physically and mentally. I walked alone most days during the whole day - I find this reposing (if you can express it like that in English), letting my thoughts wander, not being troubled by the concerns of others you are walking with, a lot of singing, aloud. But then the charm of these caminos is the fact that you are never quite alone, always someone who overtakes you or whom you overtake, someone sitting by the wayside having a rest - people you meet again and again. And if you think you have lost them because they walked faster than you, there you find them again, because they had to put in a day's rest somewhere.

I did find the long stretches of straight track in vast fields very trying - probably more so, since it was so very hot. Not a tree or a bush to be found along the camino. As on the first half of this camino there were long stretches of Route Nacional. And if I were the kind to avoid long mind-killing  parts of the walk, I would have taken a bus or a taxi during the last etappe into Ourense - awful! But then you apply your mind and think of other things and get on with it......

As for the distance of this walk, I have added up the kilometers of the etappes as indicated in the guide books and come to 412 km. When taking the height differences into consideration to calculate the total effort I arrive at least at 582 km. Looking up last year's distance I find that I had arrived at 514 km in a straight line and 547 km of effort. This year the parcours was much more mountainous which explains maybe why I am so very tired in spite of having shortened the etappes - I just find going up and up so very hard.... And not getting enough sleep does not help either - I would go to sleep at about 11pm and wake up at 4am - after that I would maybe go back to sleep or not. Up at 5:30h at the latest to be out by daybreak at 6:30 at the latest. So now I sleep late every morning!

This year I had a problem with my leg which lasted well over a week - I do not know whether some beest bit me during my siesta - that happened to me 15 years ago during my tour of Bretagne - or wether I strained my tendons walking too quickly over difficult terrain.  I tried to walk more slowly, but found this :extremely difficult to keep up; so I shortened my etappes to give my leg a maximum of rest and that did the trick. And the "Tourista" did not hit again after that one night.

My gear was the same as last year's - I do not think I can reduce the weight there. I could have carried less food - wherever I passed there was the possibility of buying a meal in the evening and having a sandwich prepared for the following day. Anyway the weight of my pack is no problem any longer - not like my first long walk where I kept sending home parcels with things I did not really need.

So, overall this has been again a very good experience and I am looking forward to next year's which is already being hatched: the Ruta de la Plata. When I looked into the Camino de  Santiago called Via de Plata two years ago, I discovered that the original Roman road crossed the Spanish peninsula in a straight line from South to North ending in Gijon, not at all in Santiago. But gradually the name was applied to the camino to Santiago.

Contacting the Gijon tourist office I discovered that the old Roman road is being resuscitated as Ruta de la Plata riding on the wave of popularity of the caminos de Santiago. I have been told that the marking of a walk Ruta de la Plata was completed last year. Will need to find out where one finds a roof to sleep under etc etc.

So the plan is to go back to Granja de Moreruela, from where on the Camino you go either West  towards Tabara on the Camino Sanabrès or North to Astorga from where you continue West on the Camino Francès. I will go to Astorga and continue North on the Ruta de la Plata to Gijon. No idea how many kilometers that means; plenty of time to work this out as well as accommodation. Now summer holidays  are here with several waves of visitors - other things to think about.....

So Bernard, prepare yourself! And thank you again for putting so much effort into my projects inspite of your great health problems! Thank you and un grande abrazo!

Conclusion - entrée finale pour cette année
