INA de Ploumanach au cap Finisterre à pied: Day 16

Day 16 Mieres - Oviedo Sunday, 26/06/2016

18 km + a total of 450 m steeply up and 300 steeply down = 25.5 km
Sky grey all morning with the sun coming out in the afternoon during our last stop above Oviedo

What a day this has been - very strenuous for me with the steep ups and downs - quite a lot of road though, which makes the climbs much easier. And the lush green countryside of Asturias very easy on the eye. It rains a lot this side of the mountains with the clouds coming in from Biscay dropping their charge as they cross the mountains.

Didn't drop anything on us though today. We had ideal walking weather and several long pauses to recover - since there were no bars in most of the villages we came through, we had really long pauses in El Padrun and Olloniego and finally in a meadow just above Oviedo. A final difficult descent on a bumpy path and we came out on to the road system leading into Oviedo. Through more greenery, then pleasant residential suburbs - no endless dreary industrial areas to go through, as I had to do three years ago when I came in on the plain from north/east. Coming in from the south you drop in straight from the mountains - wonderful!

At one point we felt lost - could see the cathedral when the yellow arrows wanted to send us somewhere else. So we decided to ignore them. Picked them up again later and followed them into the old town....

The cathedral (San Salvador) was closed - closed on Sundays except for mass. So our visit to San Salvador will have to wait. Found ouselves a bar in the pedestrian zone, our packs still on our backs, as usual. And after a long sit over drinks we finally went to find our hotel. On the edge of the pedestrian area, very close to the cathedral. Great luxury! Gran Hotel Espana**** which Andrea had booked on the internet at the same price as we had paid for the much more modest establishments along the camino. You can see us walking in with our packs! However they didn't bat an eyelid and soon we were installed, washed and clean and ready to go out again. A siesta for me was too late (18h). Evening meal was too early - two hours were spent consulting the British press on the internet with the girls reading out to each other and to me....

Out to eat, found a wine bar almost immediately and liked it so much that we stayed. Finished our evening with a stroll around the old town. And so to bed....

Jour 16 Mieres – Oviedo Dimanche 26/06/2016

18 km plus 450 mètres de dénivelée positive et 300 de descente = Total 25.5 km

Ciel gris toute la matinée avec le soleil qui apparaît l’après-midi lors de notre dernier arrêt sur les hauteurs d’Oviedo.

Quelle journée, très fatiguant pour moi avec ces montées et ces descentes à forte déclivité, pas mal de routes aussi ce qui me rend les montées plus faciles. Le vert de la luxuriante campagne des Asturies est très agréable pour les yeux. Il pleut beaucoup sur ce versant de montagne les nuages du golfe de Gascogne qui vident leur pluie en traversant les montagnes.

Mais pas une goutte pour nous en cette journée. Temps idéal pour marcher et beaucoup de pauses pour récupérer car il n’y avait pas de bars dans la plus part des villages que nous traversions. On a fait de très longs arrêts à El Padrun et Olloniego puis pour finir, dans une prairie sur les hauteurs d’Oviedo.

Une dernière descente difficile sur un chemin cahoteux et on est arrivées sur la route menant à Oviedo en traversant des quartiers résidentiels agréables et verdoyants, pas de zone industrielles interminables à traverser, comme j’avais du le faire il y a trois ans en arrivant de la plaine du nord-est. En arrivant du sud vous arrivez directement de la montagne. Magnifique!

On s’est perdues à un endroit, on avait une vue sur la cathédrale alors que les flèches nous envoyaient dans une autre direction. On a décidé de les ignorer puis on les a retrouvées et les avons suivies jusqu’à la vieille ville.

La cathédrale San Salvador était fermée comme tous les dimanches sauf pour la messe. On devait donc attendre pour la visiter. On a trouvé un bar dans la zone piétonne, les sacs toujours sur le dos. Après une bon moment à se désaltérer on est enfin parties pour chercher notre hôtel situé en limite de zone piétonne, tout près de la cathédrale. Grand luxe. Andréa avait fait la réservation sur internet pour un prix identique à celui payé pour des établissements de moindre qualité sur le camino. Imaginez nous avec nos sacs à l'accueil, mais ils ne firent aucune remarque et on s’est installées rapidement, lavées et nettoyées, prêtes à ressortir. Trop tard pour moi pour faire une sieste (18 heures), trop tôt pour le repas ! on a lu la presse anglaise pendant deux heures sur le net.

Sortie pour le repas, on a trouvé un bar à vins presque de suite, on a aimé et on est restées. Petit tour dans la vieille ville ensuite et au lit.
