Day 15 Lundi 15 juin 2015

Day 15     Monday  15 June 2015

Laza  -  Albergueria

13km  +  400m up quite steeply = 4km = total effort of 17 km
4 h plus 2 stops of 10 min

Awake earlyish and out late - short etappe, weather cool, so no need to rush. Weather cloudy with sunny intervals - no need to get my hat out.

So this day started with several kilometres flat along a country road with only a very occasional car. Apart from two young Spaniards who overtook me after the first half hour I did not see anybody walk ahead or behind me until my arrival.

At the entrance to the first village a bar was announced. This turned out to be a small terrasse and, since it was too cold to sit outside, a man's tiny kitchen with one chair to sit, no table. The two young Spaniards left as I arrived; so I sat on the chair without taking my pack off and had a coffee and the old man whose establishment I found myself in told me that.several people had passed this morning, amongst others four South Africans......

After that no more road until the last kilometer, but a comfortable way which reminded me of a disused railway track going up imperceptably - going up 100 m, but so gently that I cannot count this as a special effort.

Then it hit me - a very steep, but very beautiful climb - at first steeply up then gently, almost flat. This repeated itself several times until there were no more flat intervals, but it went up and up - oh good, there is the top! - oh no, just turning slightly and continuing up and always steep - onto a ridge and even there continuing up and up!  What an experience! And what a view to either side! And a final kilometer on the country road and I have arrived! After only 4 hours!

A lovely beer in the little bar "Rincon del Peregrino" - not many people yet in the albergue the host informed me, only four - "South Africans?" I asked - I was immensely pleased to find them again.....

So I settled in the albergue across the road. This albergue used to be an old house falling into ruins - two old houses in fact - reconstructed by the host of the bar - upstairs ten bunk beds in two rooms with one bathroom in one of the dorms - a plasticky affair affording privacy only from view if you see what I mean.

Downstairs as you come in, on your right immediately, the door to a bathroom - its door closed by a great hook which leaves a big gap - if someone wants to peep. Towards the back a kitchen with dining table and through to next door a living room with several tables and chairs.

Shower and long siesta and hanging about in the.sunshine. Starting the blog and dropping off to sleep over it......

Later in the afternoon a German family arrived, mother Tobia (without s), father Wolfgang and daughter Anna.....

The South Africans have eaten and are ready to go to bed. The Germans are preparing their meal and, upon my question, answered that they are not against having some wine, but haven't got any. So I will go to the bar and buy a bottle  - what do you think......

Jour 15 Lundi 15 Juin 2015

Laza - Albergueria

Day 14     Sunday  14 June 2015

Campobecerros  -  Laza

15 km    4h with no real break

Lying on my bed in a casa rural in Laza - private bedroom, private bathroom. Short etappe to give my leg a good rest - arrived at 11:45h!!!

It rained through the night. When I left at 7:45h it was just spitting, but soon picked up.That was typical - rain all morning, increasing, decreasing and when I did not hear it drumming on my umbrella any longer and folded the umbrella, it soon started again. So in the end I just kept the umbrella up all the time.

Hardly any landscape photos - same landscape as before, but wet and with clouds hanging low. The only thing interesting to photograph was the high speed railway tunneling because I could get two tunnel entrances on either side of a valley on the same photo and my penny dropped at last - when I had thought about it at all, I had wondered where were the flat parts of this line in this landscape - well, there aren't any naturally like in the plains with the vast fields! Here it is just a succession of tunnels and bridges -  out of a tunnel and straight on to a bridge and into another tunnel which leads onto another bridge and so on. And all these tunnels are being bored(?) at the same time. That means that the same heavy machinery is needed on each of these sites and road access for heavy machinery had to be built for each one of them - two for each tunnel on either side of the mountain which will serve of course also for the construction of the bridge.

And where to deposit the rocks and earth coming out of the bore-hole? Some of it is just deposited on the mountain side. But I had noticed big earth moving machines spreading earth on what looked like landfills. And that is what is happening - land is being filled and planted with trees. So all along this stretch of the railway line the landscape will be changed. And the cost of it all! With very good Autovias will there be enough passengers on the trains?---

When at last I had finished taking photographs of the tunneling Giuseppe came over the top (I had started on the last endless descent) and we continued on our way together.

Giuseppe told me that the South Africans had put up at "his" casa rural as well as the two Italians I had first met in the albergue in Requejo. So that explained where some of them had disappeared to. But not Marie-Helene...

At one point there was a sign for a bar in the next village and we were going to stop for a coffee. However the bar turned out to be a table under one of these balconies of the typical old houses here with a thermos marked  "cafe" and water etc - I did not feel like stopping in the rain and Giuseppe did not stop either.

The descent to Laza was mostly on the road, so quite easy, since cars normally are not expected to negotiate very steep roads - unlike pedestrians.

As I said at the beginning, we arrived at 11:45h, discovered that we had booked a room in the same casa rural, took up our rooms and went out for a bite to eat since neither of us had had much of a breakfast.

Back "home" for a shower and siesta - I slept for over an hour and am still in bed more than two hours later. We have had rain and sunshine alternating all afternoon. I will probably go out for a meal at about 8 pm.

Have just brought in my washing and met one of the two Italians going up the stairs - we might go out together for our meal.....

Campobecerros - Laza

Day 13     Saturday  13 June 2015

A Gudina  -  Campobecerros

20 km + 400m height difference = 24 km effort

I am lying in bed - I am always lying down when writing for my blog!  Am quite alone in this albergue  - expected to see at least Marie-Helene and the two South African couples, but no, nobody. Where is everybody??? Giuseppe had said, he was going to put up in the Casa Nunes, and when just now I went out onto the terrace to check my washing  there was a shout "iiina!"  Giuseppe from a house further up the road! We will meet at the bar for a meal at 8 o'clock.

This is a very weird situation: Two days ago Manuel had telephoned to make a reservation for me - this being a private albergue they would normally accept a reservation and they did - they were going to reserve a lower bed for me. This being the only albergue in this village and several people having indicated their intention of stopping here, Marie-Helene telephoned too and got the answer "We don't take reservations."

So when we separated after breakfast in the bar in A Gudina         Marie-Helene and I had agreed that whoever arrived first would block a bed for the other. I took off half an hour after Marie-Helene and did not overtake her. And when I stopped after two hours' walk, gradually everybody I knew came past - stopped to talk for while, had a bite to eat standing on the path at my feet while I was sitting in the heath with a phantastic view over the reservoir (Embalse de As Portas om the river Camba):

First to come past.were Juergen and a limping Mariana - they are going on to Laza; then came Manuel, who for some reason had not gone farther than A Gudina as he had intended; but he just said hello in passing and is going on to Laza. Then passed the two South African couples, one after the other, and confirmed that they were going to stop in Campobezerro: then arrived Giuseppe who actually sat down and stayed for ages, and finally Heiner who was also going on to Laza.

This has been a beautiful walk again! A lot of road, but very minor country road. Very funny - as I was coming out of A.Gudina onto this country road there was a big sign (see photo): "Attention! Slow down! Pilgrims on the road!" very much like "Cattle on the road!" - but no picture of a pilgrim, the way you have signs of deer crossing in Europe, moose in Sweden, cangoroos in Australia etc.

The road or track followed mostly a ridge - when it did not actually go right along the top, affording a phantastic view to both sides, it went just below - magnificent. There were very few difficult climbs, except right at the end an extremely difficult steep descent, rocky, slippery, wet - it had started to rain while I was still at the top! Was I glad to have my umbrella! No rain splashing into my face and on my glasses!

Oh, I am not alone any longer! Three young Spanish women have arrived - so there is a bit of life and the place does not feel quite as weird.

Tomorrow only 15 km, but difficult ones: we are at 900m now; have to go up to 1000, down 50, up 50 and then steeply down to Laza which is at 450m. And I am developing a slight pain in my right leg just above the ankle. Have Voltarene gel which I am applying before it gets any worse....

Jour 13 Samedi 13 Juin 2015

A Gudina - Campobecerros

Day 12-- -Vendredi 12 juin

Day 12     Friday  12 June 2015

Lubian  -  A Gudina

25 km + 700m difference in height = 7 km  = a total effort of 32 km

6 h + 2 stops of 15 min and 1h

Today the camino went over the pass called "Portela de la Canda" - 1250m.

I am lying on my bed in a hotel! Sharing a room with Marie-Helene, a room and a bathroom just for the two of us! This morning I telephoned to make a reservation for a room for one. Ten minutes later Marie-Helene wanted to do the same "Sorry, no more rooms for one left!" So I suggested we take a room with twinbeds for two of us. After having shared the same room with 6 others and the one bathroom with 8, this is quite an improvement!

So, when I left at 6:45h it was very cold. So much so that I regretted not having brought any gloves! Marie-Helene was the first to leave, then Hannes - he is Austrian from Graz and he is the one who arrived quite late in the afternoon yesterday.

So this morning my hands were so cold that I left my sticks dangling from my elbows while I pushed my hands under the straps(?) of my pack to warm them up a bit.

A beautiful sunny morning, but a difficult walk - again after a good while of flat the camino went down to the bottom of the valley (Lubian sits quite high up on the flank(?) of the mountain) and then up and up and up, and flattening a bit and up again and again. The path difficult too, but always varied and always under trees. Not that there was any need for shadow today! The sun did not pick up any strength this morning and by lunchtime it had disappeared altogether!

As I reached the height of the pass, I saw Marie-Helene studying a tourist map set in stone. Then first Hannes continued on his way and then Marie-Helene too. And I sat on a bench and ate a piece of.chocolate - I always have chocolate in my bumbag - as comfort food and generally for survival, in case I run out of other food !

As I was getting ready to continue, first Juergen appeared, then Mariana and I took off, followed closely by them at first. But then, you see, this was the other side of the pass and all downhill, and I am quite good going downhill, so I picked up speed and soon overtook Marie-Helene, to then be overtaken myself by Manuel - he was "flying" down the path - no more problem with his feet - he said he was going beyond our etappe - goodbye and buen camino!

In the first village there was a bar, so I went in for a coffee and found installed for breakfast Hannes and Marie-Helene! What a brillant idea! Me too! Me too! And then Mariane and Juergen appeared and shared one bocadillo enorme. Then Giuseppe and finally Heiner, the big German.

We all went at different speeds, crossed each other, lost each other again and again and ended up in the same hostal, where some of us have just had a good meal together, not the typical pilgrims' menu, but just one dish with the necessary quantity of red wine and followed by a special brew of herbal liqueur or grappa - you see the situation.

In bed now, packed my pack and so to sleep.......

Lubian - A Gudina

Day 11- -11 juin 2015

Day 11     Thursday  11 June 2015

Requejo  -  Lubian

19.5 km  plus 300m up and 300m down ie 6 km more in terms of effort = 25.5 km       6h plus 3 stops of 10 min each

Today the camino went over the Padornelo Pass - 1300m

I have noticed that over the past three days, with all the ups and downs we have gained 300m in height (didn't I say the ups seemed longer than the downs!) - whereas since Salamanca we had been oscillating(?) around 700m, we are now at 1000m and today we went over the Padornelo-Pass at 1300m.

Beautiful cool day. Thinking this was a short etappe I did not leave as early as before - 7h45.  The works for the new fast train line between Madrid and A Coruna are in progress just above Requejo, boring a tunnel. There a deviation of the camino has been set up going on the road for a long way. However my hospitalera told me to follow the original route - there would not be any problem. And the wasn't.

The path went mostly through woods - it was always beautiful, narrow often, sometimes wider - it was grassy, or muddy, or stony, or puddly, or sandy, or pebbly. For several kilometres it was flat until it reached the works site. There I had the choice of following the camino or taking to the road which was also marked as camino. Of course I followed the camino and after a very short while came to a waterway which went over big rocks(see photo) - it would have been possible to get across, but I did not feel up to it, could easily see myself fall into the water, pack and all!

So I turned back and took to the road which went up steadily - this was the old Nacional which was beginning to be quite overgrown and the surface was crumbling - the  loose stones rolling underfoot did not make walking very easy, but the fact that the road (on which was no traffic at all) was not steep made up for that.

On the other side of the pass I soon found myself on the Nacional 525 again - another deviation which this time I followed and ended up on a grassy path going through meadows, steadily down - when I could see Lubian quite high up on the other side, oh! oh! - going right down to a river at the bottom of that valley and then half way up before going down to the bottom of another valley with its river before going up in a long climb to Lubian and bang on, there was the albergue right at the entrance of the village!

And there was a lower bed left for me. Quite a crowd assembled already: two elderly couples from South Africa, Wendy and Martin and Cathy and Roddy. And there was Manuel. A little after me Heiner showed up; then Marie-Helene from St Malo - she came back after taking three days of rest in Ourense - she had had a fall and done something to her foot plus insect bites plus I don't know what, the accumulation of which had made her stop for a while - now she is starting again where she had left off.

Apparently two more people have arrived - don't  know who - they are downstairs.....

Will go and do some shopping now.

Jour 11 jeudi 11 Juin 2015

Requejo - Lubian
