Day 2 -2 Juin 2015

Day 2     02 June 2015

Calzada de Valdunciel  -  El Cubo de la Tierra del Vino

http://www.diegoweb.net/vueltas/zem.htm
20 km     5 h walk + 2 pauses, 15 min  and  1 hour, food and sieste

Last night we finished the day with an apero. I contributed the wine - who would have doubted it - and Claire and Philippe provided melon, cheese and dry saussage(?) plus slices of lemon and lemonade which the lady of the "alimentacion" put in her fridge to cool it for us. Thus we had what is called Tinto de Verano:  one third red wine plus two thirds lemonade and a slice of lemon - very pleasant and refreshing and not too intoxicating.

Late in the afternoon another two pilgrims arrived, Spaniards both, of a certain age. And later still another Spaniard. Thus we were "complete":  Claire and Philippe, Magaly and Bernd, I and the three Spaniards of whom we do not know the names - one sat with us for a while and we managed to communicate - he does 40 - 50 km per day, did not partake of our red wine, not even the "lemonaded down" Tinto de Verano. But this morning he left only at 7 am!  One of the others got up at 3:30 and left at 4 am!!!

I was the last to leave 7:30. Got myself lost twice because I followed the old route which was not marked any longer, but indicated as one option in my two guide books.

However I survived and arrived in.good shape under my magic umbrella (remember!).

Written wednesday morning

Yesterday ended on a luxurious meal at the house of our hospitaleira's mother: spaghetti with lots of lovely things thrown in, three slices of "lomo" and homemade lemony cream - I got one if my slices of meat in a "doggy bag" because I could not finish it.

Now it is almost 5am. Since today we have 31 km to Zamora and it is going to be hot again, we are all going to leave at 6am. The hospitaleira left us our breakfast last night.

After having spent most of the first two days on or next to the Nacional 630 or even between the Nacional and the Autovia I am looking forward
to having an entire etappe on a path or track far from traffic!

Day 1 01 June 2015

Day 1     01 June 2015

Salamanca  -  Calzada de Valdunciel     19 km  (flat - we are in or on the meseta - so no km added to account for differences in height of the terrain)

Had to go to the post office, so I did not get on my way as early as I would have liked, but had a good breakfast in a bar while waiting for the post office to open.

Mooched slowly out of town through the rush hour traffic along the Nacional 630, an old friend from last year. But when I came to sign indicating the Camino de Santiago: "Itinerario culturel" just before a huge intersection with the new "autovia" (see photo), I had to laugh, picked myself up and got going at my usual pace. An hour and a half along the Nacional, singing the Teddybears' Picnic - that gives a good rhythm!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxFIGWm9M6w
At Aldeasecca at last I could leave the Nacional and from then on it was a wide track, well constructed, one of a network of tracks which run between vast fields of mostly wheet, still green, and some barley, already golden.
The sun was shining, no birds were singing - there are no trees or at least nowhere along my track until I arrived at an amazingly well equipped sports ground next to a village called Castellanos de Villiquera - there were several trees with picnic tables and benches in the SHADE! So I had my sandwich and a short lie-down and went off again. On the whole the heat was not too bad because mostly there was a slight breeze.
Arrived in Calzada de Valdunciel to find the breton couple already installed and a Franco-German couple too - she is French and he is German. Since then a Spaniard has arrived, nobody else. So my worries about having to sleep on the floor were quite unnecessary.

Will now go off to buy some food - the "Alimentacion" will have opened....

So, here I am, comfortably installed in a large bed in a room all to myself in the Hostal Catedral almost next to the cathedral.
Since I did a fair amount of walking about with Joerg and Helmut last year including finding the Bus Station, I had no problem going straight to the hostel I wanted to put up in. The room was not ready, so I left my pack and went off to find the tourist office and then went about doing a bit of reconnoitering (I think that is the word - don't dare to leave this mail to find the dictionnary in case I do not find my way back into the mail!).
So, amongst other things I looked for the albergue de peregrinos which is not far from the cathedral to see whether the way from there was marked to go out from Salamanca.

Did not find the markings, but saw a couple with big packs on which were sewn the logos of the Association Bretonne des Amis de Saint Jacques. Since they where standing looking about as if they were lost and the lady was leaning on her stick as if she was rather tired, I ventured to address them, in French. I explained that I had the same logo on my pack.
Then the Monsieur looked at me more carefully: "You are not from Perros-Guirec by any chance?" - "I am, but how do you know? It is not written on my forehead!" - "You must be Ina! I have followed your blog! I am also with Rando Tregor (our rambling club) - you are with 15 km and I am with the 12 km (in three hours every Friday afternoon)."  So I lead them to the Rua Mayor where both our hostals are located and we said goodbye. They are Philippe and Claire and no doubt we will see each other again at some albergue or other, possibly tomorrow: my first etappe 19 km to Calzada de Valunciel where the albergue has only 8 beds and there are no hotels, hostals or casas rurales. At a pinch I can sleep on the floor. You cannot reserve by phone and with Claire and Philippe we have agreed that whoever arrives first blocks beds for the others...
Voila, the day of my arrival!

*************************************************************************************

2015- DEPART INA J - 1

Here I am off again, tomorrow evening by Eurolines bus from Rennes via Bilbao to Salamanca where I stopped last year. The original Roman Via de la Plata (not silver but plata  is a corruption of the Arabic “al-balat” indicating a ‘broad surfaced road’).) went from Sevilla to Gijon on the Asturian coast. The camino de Santiago which is known as Via de la Plata leaves the Roman road either at Astorga to continue to Santiago on the Camino Francès or at Granja de Moruela to continue to Santiago as Camino Sanabrès. This is the one I will take thus avoiding the very busy Camino Francès altogether.
As on the previous occasions my two daughters (and may-be my son as well) will walk with me for a few days. On June 20th they will fly into Santiago and then take a bus or a taxi to wherever I will have got to by then.

******************************************************************

Back home

Arrived back home yesterday, very tired, slept late this morning and am now undoing my pack. Started the washing machine.  As I intend to walk on a camino to Santiago every year as long as I can, I am keeping as much of my gear as possible together in a big box, and I have made a check list at last.

This last entry to the blog this year is also the opportunity to express publicly my appreciation to Bernard for keeping the blog for me and for doing the translations – a formidable job!

Last Day

Final thoughts on this year's experience

I am writing these down at random as they come into my head.

The total distance I walked is.514 and 547 with climbing.... Bernard, can you work this out for me please - I gave away my German guide book and lost the French one!

My gear was very well. I gave my inflatable matress and a sweat shirt to Andrea to take back - did very well without. Still carried too much food on my back.

Apart from the first very hot days, the water supply was good. However, since I cannot estimate how much water is left in the camelbag, I always carry a small bottle in case the camel bag runs dry - then I can "space" out the water in the bottle over the remaining distance - this happened once and I was extremely glad to have the little bottle.

The distances I walked were good - could have done 30 km more fre, but on this camino you often have very little choice because there is nothing in between the two places suggested for an etappe. I have never had any problem with my feet - did not anoint them specially or massage them; so I am extremely lucky in that respect. No knee or other leg problem either......

However much more than 30km a day I cannot take. No matter how much time I have for breaks arriving late, I feel my feet cannot take any more - and since I do not want to ruin my feet, I do not try and test how far I might go.

Very lucky weatherwise this year! After all the rain last year, this time I had only one hour of rain while actually walking - rain while sitting in a restaurant (the same day) and rain during the night very occassionally. But the heat during the first few days was almost too much! It became hot so early.

As to the camino itself - this one was different somehow. The Norte and the Primitivo ressembled each other. This one, following largely the original Roman "calzada",  had long stretches of straight (straight as drawn with a ruler) stony path, track or even road - the following generations of roads had simply been built on the original ones. Thus you have parts of the Nacional 630 covering the old Roman road.

Since the camino followed heights mostly (to avoid being inundated, I have heard), often there was a superb view over vast landscapes. This is what I have seen so far - the second half of the camino, going through the mountains, is likely to be different - have to study my map of Spain.

And last not least, I have to spend more time doing the walking alone. This I had been looking forward to and, what with one thing or another, it did not quite happen that way......

Am on my way home - after 15 hours on the bus I am having coffee in a bistro in the station of Rennes. Will go out in a minute to sit somewhere and have the bocadillo and apple I brought from Spain for my breakfast.

PS to the final thoughts:  here is the number of kilometres walked without consideration of the various stretches with a more or less steep elevation: 514 km, and with consideration of the increased effort needed to go up it is 547 km.

.

Day 23    Thursday 29/05/2014

Salamanca  -  and going home

Woke up as usual - 5h30 and had coffee in bed. Finally I got up at 6h30 and packed - had emptied and dried as best as I could the camel bag; so, with no more food supplies, no water, the rucksack was back to featherweight.

At 7h30  I went out for a walkabout - the sun was out, but it was very cold such that the fleece jacket plus anorak over my basic t-shirt was not too much.

What a splendid city this is! So many magificent buildings - churches and palaces - all built of yellow sandstone which gives it its golden
colour in the sun!

I ended up in front of a romanesque round church of San Marcos.  It was closed; so I walked round a bit, took the photograph of a renaissance style petrol service station and found a tiny churreria (standing room only and take away) - very busy with lots of people picking up very big packages of churros while I was having my standup coffee.

By the time I had finished, the church was open - it is very simple and very beautiful. Since there was a service going on when I arrived, I just sat down and waited until the end - did me a lot of good, just sitting there, quietly, thinking over the last weeks...

Walking back to the Plaza Mayor I came in at a different "puerta" and noticed,  through another one, a building which looked like a market hall. There I bought delicious "lomo iberico bellota" ham and old sheep's cheese (the cheese was old, not the sheep!) - this relieved my purse considerably and has loaded up my pack again! ----

Part of the decoration of the facade of the main university building is a skull with a frog (toad?) sitting on top - this is supposed to be a symbol of depravity(? looks strange!); however the students say it brings luck. It is very small and difficult to find. However while I had visited the little round church, Helmut and Joerg
had been to the university, met Jascha, another pilgrim we had walked with who knew where this skull was. So he showed them and they showed me.

And we walked about a bit more, fed on some tapas and said goodbye.

I had over an hour to kill before I could pick up my pack ( which I had left at the hostel) and go to the bus station. So I went back to the cathedral, paid once more my entrance  fee (4 euros for senior citizens) and went round relaxed with all the time in the world unlike the evening before. There are so many details to take in! Almost too much! With all these buildings - you keep the impression of magnificence without remembering the details - with the exception of the skull with the frog of course!

Picked up my pack full of cheese and ham and lugged it to the "estacion de autobuses" where I sat and waited for over an hour without any other passengers showing up for this bus. Got quite worried and went to check at the guichet - am I the only passenger getting on this bus here? No, don't worry, you are waiting in the right place!

When I got back the bus had arrived and there was one more passenger getting on with me. There were a handfull of passengers already on the bus - all Portuguese - the bus came from Portugal. And I will not have to change bus in Bilbao, but this one will go straight through to Rennes!!! And I am sitting right at the back with nobody else - maybe I will be able to stretch myself out during the night - have my sleeping bag handy!

At the moment I am having dinner in a very big service station in ????? We have one hour, half an hour left to finish the chips which I am eating with my fingers while typing this, accompagnied by a small bottle of wine - who could have doubted that?! Not so small a bottle either - the ones on Brittany Ferries are smaller.

Will call off now and see if I can connect myself to send this off....

JOUR 23
29 MAI

Day 22   28/05/2014

San Pedro de Rozados  -  Salamanca

23 km  +  2 x 100 m elevation = 25km effort

5h + 1 break of 30 min

We've made it - Salamanca! Came into town at 1h30 pm after half an hour's walk round along a sort of green belt like a more or less well maintained park - suddenly there was the Roman bridge and the cathedral. And as we were making our way into the town centre and walking along the Rua Mayor which goes from the cathedral to the Plaza Mayor we came across many tourists im groups or individually and I had the impression that we were quite a sight to behold - with our big packs and walking sticks.

Ended up in a cheap hostal, clean, with individual rooms, but shared bathroom - right on the Rua Mayor half way between the Plaza Mayor and the cathedral. After sleeping in dorms in the albergues this is heaven! ---

This morning we hot up latish, because breakfast was not going to be served before 7h, and the etappe was not going to be particularly long (did not think about having to go up for long stretches of track) and there was not going to be any sun! Which indeed there was not!

So we had all day to do the etappe; but, falling into our usual walking rhythm, we could not help arriving quite early. Had one break half way in a village for which we had to make a slight detour - coffee and a delicious piece of a kind of pie - and back to the road or rather track.

We did not have any road today!  Left just before a couple we had first come across yesterday - Spaniards from Barcelona; then we overtook Ulli and Willy, but stayed behind Rainer and Anne-Rose. Anyway it was track  through pastures and finally vast fields of wheat.

I do not think I mentioned that all these days in this vast landscape of pasture there were lots of little lakes or ponds - artificially made to catch water for the animals. ----

After lunching on what we had left in our packs and siesting, out to go to the tourist office in the Plaza Mayor. The is a phantasticly beautiful enclosed square with arcades going all around it. Got our info about what to see in town, buses to Madrid etc., had a beer in one of the bars which are all around the square and finally went in search of the bus station from where I too will be leaving for home.

And now we have just come back in after a visit to the cathedral - overwhelming!  - and a last meal together. And so to sleep......

DERNIER JOUR
28 MAI 2014
