DAY 5  -- May 11

El Real de la Jara  -  Monesterio

21km + elevation of 330m (from 430 to 760m, mostly during the last 3.5 km) = a total effort of 24 km

4h30 + 1 break of 30 min

After my siesta I am sitting with my coffee in a two-bed room which I have to myself (with an almost private bathroom to share
with another two-bed room, occupied by one person). Life is good!

Up early with coffee in bed as in the old days - no breakfast - I had forgotten to buy bread and so I wanted to keep the little bread I had left for my lunch.

Out at daybreak at 6h45. Wonderful day - very fresh. Therefore I took up my normal cool weather speed which is about 5km/hour. This was perfect walking weather - brillant sunshine and a constant fairly strong breeze! This is no longer Andaluzia, but Extremadura which has the reputation of being cooler. Hope it stays this way.

http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estr%C3%A9madure

So I followed the wide track for two hours. At the point where the N630 crosses a motorway there was a service station where I had breakfast and bought some bread. And off again on the camino.

To find it you had to cross the spaghetti road system and finally clamber over the steel guardrails to get off the road - someone had kindly put a concrete plank across the concrete ditch which goes along the N-roads and motorways - so at least one did not have to go down into the ditch!

After that it was a very pleasant walk along a narrow path on the wedge between the motorway and the N630. Later lots more on the N630 - but the N-roads have very little traffic since the construction of the motorways.

The last few kms were steadily uphill and somewhat more difficult. Could not find the albergue immediately - good excuse to have a nice cold beer in a bar and ask. So here I am.

Things observed: there must be torrents of water flowing down in the spring - you can see canyons forming which are mostly dry now. And in most places where the track cuts across such a waterway the intersection has been reinforced by concrete so you do not have to ford(?) systematically although in a few places the water level is still a bit higher than the concrete reinforcement.

Off now for a bit of sightseeing, meal in a restaurant - remember, this is supposed to be a luxury trip - had a huge steak off a black pig last night - DELICIOUS!

JOUR 5 - 11 MAI

DAY 4   May 10

Jara
14km + 200m down steeply and 200m up steeply and 50 down and 50 up - so I would say that is another 4km to make a total effort of about 19km which explains the
5 hours + 3 breaks 30min, 1 h, and 30 min.

Andrea left at 7h45 and I finished my breakfast, packed my pack and at 8h40 I left with the landlady who accompanied me to the start of the camino.

Beautiful day again as I walked round the shadowy side of a hill - nice and cool! It was mostly flat, easy to walk - this is a short etappe; so I took my time looking around, took lots of photographs and ambled along.......

First the track lead through more and more of the nature park; but then I came to livestock farms. Lots of sheep, goats and black pigs where you get the iberique ham from  - the best apparently is the "jamon iberico de bellota" it comes from the free range black pigs which eat mostly acorns.

http://www.jamon.com/iberico.html

And then, during my first short break, it happened: as I was stretching out, my head on my pack, I lay on the mouthpiece of my waterpouch. This works as a valve like modern inflatable objects - you squeeze it to let air in or out! By lying on it I was squeezing it for a long time and all the water seeped out without me noticing.

When I got up I dusted my bottom and found my trousers were wet. The ground all around was stone dry - just where I had sat......

Then I had my lunch break on top of a hill with a beautiful view, I hought
this is the good life - I will stay here all afternoon rather than lie on my bed in the albergue; had my picnic, my siesta and then remembered that I had very little water - I could not possibly stay all afternoon without.

So on I went and when I could see the village I had the last sips out of my little spare bottle - made it to the albergue completely parched!

In the albergue already installed were several people I had come across before. But now we introduced each other: Jutta from Ulm in Germany, Frank from Calgary in Canada and Oskar from Sweden (forgot to ask which town).

Since then a basque cyclist has arrived and shares my room - a great talker. We went into the village together. He went shopping to cook in the albergue and I came into the
Wifi bar to sort out this blog. And now he is here sitting next to me playing with his phone like me, but bursting forth every once in a while, thus stopping me from getting this out!

Will go to a restaurant, not to a bar where they offer "pilgrims' menu" - too much! Just one dish is more than enough! And this is it for today!

http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jambon_ib%C3%A9rique

DAY 3 - may 9
30,5km + 1 x 200 m + 1 x 250m elevation (after the first was a descent of 200m and after the second an extremely steep descent of 100m) =  35km of total effort.
Walking 6h30 + 3 pauses: 45 min, 30 min and 30 min.

Out at daybrake (7h) to do the first 17 km to a National Park at a spanking pace along a large road with very little traffic. We tried to get as far as possible while it was still cool. All the same I had to open up my magic umbrella at about 10am.

Half an hour into the Parque National we had our first break with siesta and food (45 min) under the cork oaks.

By then it was very hot and I could not find my usual pace. Up and down we went on a winding piste which seemed to go all over the place. Even under the magic umbrella it was hot. After only one hour I needed another rest and then had another one just before the very steep ascent. Andrea wanted to go straight up; and I wanted to pick up some strength before having a go.

So I slowly made my way up and found Andrea waiting for me at the top. I had told her to go straight to our hotel, but she did not want to abandon me. Down we went together an extremely steep path which had been washed out by rain, it was full of rocks which we had to scramble over - very painfull!

We found our hotel, simple, but nice and clean and cool. Shower, siesta and the usual clothes washing - how to set up the clothes line - always a problem. And out for a walkabout - again there are storks nesting on top of the steeple and this time I noticed that swallows had made their nests in the bottom part of the big storks' nest!

Off now to go somewhere to eat for our last meal together. Andrea will definitely abandon me tomorrow - taxi at 8am back to Sevilla airport.....

***************************************

DAY 2 -  May 8

Guillana - Castilblanco de los Arroyos
18km + 300 elevation (remember, each 100m elevation mean 1km more in walking effort)
4h45 + 1 pause of 45 min.

Up at 6h and out at 7h30. Glorious morning! After a longish haul along a busy main road (rush hour) we came to open country - olive trees on one side and a wheet field on the other. The wheat field was enclosed by a "hedge" of a type of cactus - beautiful because it was flowering.

Further along we came across a man who was collecting wild asparagus, wispy little branches - "Very good with eggs" he told us.

On a particularly stony and steep part of the path a cyclist came toward us - a very bumpy ride downhill! And later a group of cyclists overtook us riding their bikes, but soon had to get off because the path was too severely eroded.

A cork oak plantation which is now a nature reserve was partcularly pleasant to walk in - plenty of shade!

With only 4 km left until our destination we made a longish pause - food, but no sieste. Which brings me to my latest dis.covery: I now have  a camelbak waterpouch! The ease and comfort of having a sip of water without having to stop for a drink!

Arriving at our hotel we found two pilgrims installed at a table with a cold beer -  one was flemish and the other wallon. They were getting on perfectly well! A little later they were joined by an American and they all went off to lunch somewhere. They had met at the end of the first etappe, then walked separately and met again after their walk - no doubt they will meet again tomorrow....,

Upon arrival Andrea had a coke and a coffee; I had two (!) nice cold beers, followed by a siesta; a walkabout this town - not much to see, except the storks' nest on various parts of the church roof and swallows' nests above the church door.

Shopping for tomorrows picnic and off we are now to have a bite to eat.,..

DAY 1- May 7.

SEVILLA - GUILLENA
22,4 km   5h30 + 2 breaks of 30 min

Up earlyish; breakfast at 7h30 and off at 8h30. It was already quite warm. We made our way to the Puente Isabel II which is also called the Triana bridge since it links
to Sevilla the old gypsie quarters. From there a lot of typical flamenco music and danse originated. It was also home to sailors before the decline of Sevilla's port.

A lot of photos were taken since this was the start of our walk on the Via de la Plata - in front of our hotel, under a Jacaranda tree, the first tile with the shell of St James........

Then we lost the yellow arrows and walked for a long time along a busy road through Camas and to Santiponce where we had our first break - lovely fresh orange juice.

On again along the busy main street where the trees all along were orange trees! We did not stop to visit the ruins of Italica, a roman town where the emperors Trajan (AD 53) and Hadrian (AD76) were born - too hot.
http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italica_(Espagne)

And we still had to follow a long and busy road, partly through delapidated and abandoned warehouses and across a system of flyovers until we finally reached the beginning of a roman road, straight as far into the distance as the eye could see!

It was very hot by then and I opened my magic umbrella and took off my hat. This road took us all the way to Guillana almost 9 km straight following the topography as roman roads do - up and down and up again and in every dip it was as hot as in a furnace - I felt my brain was sizzling when we stopped to have look at the guide book. But on top of each bump there was a nice little breeze.

The odd car or tractor overtook us or going the oposite. One cyclist wishef us "Buen camino!"

Then suddenly we were overtaken by a cyclist who then turned round towards us and we saw he was filming with a small handheld camera "Wouldn't it be nice if there were trees along this piste!" he said "and some places where pilgrims like you could find some water".

"The politicos should do something about it! For the poor suffering pilgrims!"  -  " Would you mind saying something like that while I film you? Where are you from? England and France?"

So he started interwiewing us in this way to put it on YouTube! I got all  tangled with Portuguese in my usual way. He explained where he was from and what to look for on YouTube (we did not understand)  -  a few more photos and off he went.

And on we went as it was getting hotter and hotter  -  being very nearly there, we wanted to arrive rather than having another pause - especially since Andrea had read somewhere that the peak temperature was in the late afternoon. So we pushed on until I could take no more! We WERE very nearly, but I needed a rest. Fortunately there were a few trees and bushes in flower which gave some welcome shade. I had a short sieste, a bite to eat and life was good again.

Off to go out for a meal now and bed early in order to get out earlier tomorrow. Breakfast in this place starts at 6h30.

JOUR 1 - 7 mai 2014
SEVILLA - GUILLENA
22,4 km   5h30 + 2 breaks of 30 min

A demain

mercredi 7 mai 2014

So I moved out of my little pension this morning and met Andrea at the airport. Since the room she had booked for us in a fancy hotel (using her airmiles) was not yet ready, we went on a walkabout using my superior knowledge of this city acquired yesterday!!!

The queue around the cathedral was shorter than yesterday, but still too long.

On we went into the old jewish quarter. There we came to a house with an exposition about the history of jews in Spain - and I found my suspicion confirmed that all the houses and streets were given these saints' names to eradicate completely anything jewish in that part of the town.

Had a bite to eat and on the way back to our hotel for our siesta (at about 2pm) we found that there was no queue at all at the cathedral! So in we went - it is magnificient! And the price included the access to the Giralda. The is the famous clocktower which used to be the minarett(?) of the mosque on the site of which the cathedral was built.

We went up it - and the reason I  am mentioning this is that there are no stairs but ramps! The tower is square and you have one ramp per side on each level and every two ramps bring you up one floor - there are 17 floors, so you go up and up and up again 37 ramps! The reason for the ramps rather than stairs? The sultan and officials used to go up to the top of the tower on horseback!

Back to the hotel, siesta at 4pm; back out at 5.30pm for a city tour by bus; shopping for our picnic tomorrow; some wine with a platter of cheese and bread for our dinner and here I am in bed writing today's contribution to the blog.

We will start on our way tomorrow and will need to get out fairly early because of the heat.....

Ah, something I forgot: we were coming past the wast terrace of a restaurant with a canopy of vegetation above the tables. There were lots of people sitting at the tables fanning themselves in the heat and from time to time a haze of water came down from the canopies - to cool the air I suppose!

**************************************************
