SNSM CAP FERRET

SNSM Cap Ferret

"Vincent Pallet was the one who had spontaneously responded, when I had sent out my call for help in finding accommodation for the 24th July - in spite of the fact that that evening he and his wife Christine were celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary.

They live at Caouey on the Bassin d'Arcachon and their house is on the other side of the road from his mother's. His mother has somewhat lost her head and lives in an old peoples' home; but they take her out occasionally and on such occasions she sleeps in her house - this was such an occasion and I was put up there too.

Vincent picked me up on a supermarket parking lot - he was bare chested and bare foot, apparently his normal way of dressing in the summer - whiteness his blackened skin! When the guests were arriving Christine had to remind him that it was time to dress, so he put on a beautiful white linen shirt over what he was wearing and that was that.

A highlight of the evening was the arrival of one couple who brought as a present a donkey, a bale of straw and a sack of carrots. The donkey was the delight of the children and the following morning I heard Vincent's voice talking gently to the donkey as he was taking him - her rather, this is a female - to the field behind the house.

For our meal there was a sheep roasting on the spit Later there was dancing to a lot of very loud musik - as the neighbours were also invited, this did not matter.

At one point Granny too wanted to be on the dance floor - there she was, not really moving, because she cannot, but everybody was jumping about around her and once in a while someone took her by the hands and pretended to be dancing with her and she seemed very happy that way. Finally, after midnight, someone said: Ina, it is time you and Granny went to bed! And we were packed off to the big house on the other side of the street. That suited me nicely, because I am not used to staying up late and I had walked a long way that day.
The following morning I took the photographs which I could not take the evening before and Vincent took me to the Grand Pickey where I was to be picked up by the Arcachon lifeboat. Guess what he was wearing as he was getting into the car? Just Bermuda shorts - and Christine had to remind him that he should wear a shirt.

Christine says he puts her to shame - I like him that way, but then it is none of my business....."

 ***********************

So the voice materialized and turned out to be a substantial man (see photo) with a big smile which does not come out on the photo.

He works nights in a restaurant near the beach and needed to be off for work. Laure, his wife was not yet back from work - so Sylvain dropped me at the supermarket to buy what I needed for the following day or two. This is always a delicate matter - not too much (too heavy and might go off) and not too little - I have to maintain my strength after all - so far the reserve around the waist (the camel's hump!) has been maintained nicely.

After the shoppinging I met Nicole (remember, Montalivet!) in a Cafe - she brought my pack, gave me the receipt of the parcel she had sent and got me some moscito repellant - what a great help she has been!

The evening meal I had with Laure - again we got on immediately - and at 10pm we went to the restaurant where Sylvain works to celebrate his birthday! Voila - so far Laure and Sylvain!"

Montalivet SNSM

"Montalivet SNSM”.

So after a rhythm of 17, 24, 12, 27, and 17km, mostly with pack, sometimes without, I thought I was getting into an even pace doing 15 km to Soulac and again 15 to Montalivet. There I was received by Jeannot Peisino, president of the SNSM station, and his wife Nicole. The Montalivet station is not a lifeboat station, but a lifeguard station - there are no harbours around here, but endless beaches, no boating, but swimming and surfing. So the SNSM is responsable for all the lifeguard posts up and down the coast from Montalivet.

Nicole looked after me like a mother and when she closed the shutters of my (east-facing) room, that was my undoing: the following morning I slept til 9h! And I had wanted to be at the post office at 9h to post a number of things to lighten my pack! I found her sitting on the terrace with her breakfast, very pleased with herself, that she had managed to 'cheat' me in my planning - obviously I was in need of sleep! She kindly offered to post my things and to bring my pack to the next etappe when I arrived there in the evening.

That turned out to be an excellent idea: I had overlooked (and therefore not checked) that along that stretch of coast there is a long lake and for one place name you have three places - in this case Hourtin: Hourtin plage on the coast, Hourtin port on the lake and Hourtin, the town, even further inland, and my hosts lived in the town, which added 10 km to my walk and brought it up to 27 km!

And after having trudged along the main road for ages and was walking along a cycling track in relative comfort, a car came towards me in a cloud of dust and a voice called out to me: Ina! I have come to get you! I saw you on the main road with your umbrella and thought this must be Ina! And so I have
come to bring you home!"

Montalivet SNSM

"Approaching Royan “.

Another day walking lightly because Michel, after putting me back on my path, took my heavy pack to the hotel where I was going to spend the night in Royan.
Very much appreciated - thank you again, Joseph and Michel!

This afternoon the Royan lifeboat will take me across the Gironde "embouchure" (can't think of the word in English - it is very much like the French) to the Pointe de Graves from where I have only 7 km to my camping at Soulac sur Mer.

And finally a remark on the weather: I am very lucky in that I have had a lot of overcast skies interspersed with brilliant sunshine but mostly at least a gentle breeze!"

So, the following day Joseph puts me back on the path near the bridge and then goes to meet Michel to hand over my pack. I just carry a day pack and walk lightly the 17 km, mostly along
beaches, to La Coubre lighthouse. I telephone Michel to inform him that I can soon be picked up on a convenient parking lot - just want to go a little farther to have a look round the "pointe" to see what is to be seen on the other side. And I go, and go, and go.... Until finally I understand that I have been walking along all 5 km of a dune and now have to walk back the same distance because there is water on the other side and no way to get across it! 17 plus 10 - I had sworn I would not do such distances again! I was of course not carrying my big pack.....

Michel's house turned out to be an amazing affair - a jumble of little old houses and stables which he is joining into a most interesting spacious whole. It still needs a lot to be done to which he will do gradually as time and money allows...."

Station SNSM La Tremblade

"La Tremblade Lifeboat Station.
For some reason which I forget I had planned two nights in the area of La Tremblade, each of which I was going to spend in the house of an SNSM crew member. First Joseph picked me up in the town center and gave me a guided tour of La Tremblade (on the photo in front of the lifeboat Joseph - in orange - with Didier who has just given up his post of patron titular because he needs to give more time to his business - he breeds oysters and runs a navette across the Seurte) before taking me to the house of his lady friend where I was to spend the night. We got on extremely well and had a lively evening together - and breakfast - so much so that I forgot to take any more photographs and so have no photo of Liliane, my hostess!"

"After a very pleasant stay with my friend of many years, Danielle, at
Fouras I continued yesterday to Rochefort -17 km - and today to Marenne
- 24 km! - via Brouage, a fortified town which was used as a prison
during the revolution for priests and monks and nuns.

My day started gray which meant nice and fresh, quite windy, and then
the first drops of rain which became a constant drizzle until suddenly
it came pelting down - so much so that the drops rebounded off the
ground and I got wet from below as well as from above! As I was waiting
under a tree which did not resist the rain for long I noticed what
looked like a bus shelter from afar. Indeed it was and I decided to
settle in, had my lunch in comfort watching the rain - even had my
sieste. At one point a municipal van drove past, the driver slowing
down, watching curiously and then driving on - he must have seen my
umbrella put up in housewifely way!"

Dubitatif !

"I was walking into Rochefort with my umrella up against the blinding
sun when a youngish man came past me looking at me in a puzzled way:
Mais - il ne pleut pas! he said, it isn't raining! - This is a sunshade,
I explained - he did not look convinced...."

Escargots ! Snails !!

"After the rain I came across several men picking up things out of the grass verge along the road - lovely snails, big and fat - they come out after a nice warm rain!"

lundi 12 juillet 2010

Célèbre et ...surveillée !!

I arrived in the street where the friend lives who was going to put me
for two nights - there she was talking to neighbor, surprised that I
got there so quickly. Oh, said the neighbor's sister-in-law, are you
the lady we saw walking next to the motorway with a big backpack
carrying sunshade?!"

dimanche 11 juillet 2010

First etape in order to get back into walking with a pack - 8 km to where I
found a bit of shade - two hours rest and only three km to go to "my"
camping ground. THE revelation: my umbrella - very suitably named
because I use it to protect myself from  the sun as well as from the
rain! It is made of black tissue underneath and silvery anti-uv tissue
on top. Don't wear a hat with this and can fully enjoy the breeze coming
from the sea. And the whole of my upper body is in the shade! Brilliant!

Have been sitting here for two hours already, was joined by a young
family who had their picnic and now, alone again, I am going to have a
"sieste "- the sea is right up now - no noise but the waves rolling on to
the shore...."
