Bayonne

"SNSM Bayonne.

Walking to Bayonne turned out to be more difficult than I had anticipated. After a few kilometers in the forest I came to the bank of the river Adour. I had expected a comfortable cycling track all the way even though it would be through the port and an industrial area. As it turned out I ended up in the industrial area, but on the road amongst the cars, not on a separate track..

I liked Bayonne which is real town, alive - not just a place for tourists in the summer like most of the places I have been through since the mouth of the Gironde.

Checked with telecom my situation as to my travel in Spain, did some shopping for food an made for the SNSM station in the port to meet Philippe who is president of the station.

He arrived on a scooter with great florish and showed me the station - it is also a Centre de Formation, wonderfully equipped, with elegant furniture, kitchenette, microwave oven, television, etc. There I was locked up for the night - the station is inside the port area which is locked at night until 8 a.m.

I woke up to rain and it rained on and off all day. Twice I got myself lost because I walked hidden behind my umbrella and did not check the map often enough - which added 4 km to my etappe.....

"More on dunes.

Jean-Marc took me to Labenn beach and gave me some more explanations on dunes which is why I am sending more photos to illustrate the situation.

All along the Atlantic coast I had seen what the French call 'blockhaus' - German concrete fortifications dating from the occupation during world war 2. I had seen them behind the dunes, on the beaches and in the water. The ones on the photo used to be well inland behind the dunes! Which gives you an idea of how the is advancing...."

"SNSM Capbreton - Chez Jean-Marc and Cathy.

The day I came to Capbreton meant 28km(!) - the etappe was supposed to be Vieux Boucau - Capbreton=18 km, but because I could not find any other place I ended up in Messange, 4 km north of Vieux Boucau, and my SNSM hosts of Capbreton live in Labenn which is almost 6km south of Capbreton. Thus 10km added to the original 18 = 28!

In addition the start to the day was bad: there had been thunder on and off all night and at 6h30, just as I was coming back with my coffee from the sanitary block (no power point near my tent), it started to rain - slowly at first, so I had time to get into my tent - and then it came down in buckets.

So I waited for the rain to finish, then wiped off the tent all the stuff which had fallen out of the tree - this meant not only the tent was wet, but the towel too - so much more weight to carry all day! AND I started to walk 1 1/2 h later than usual.

In spite of this I managed to walk 18 km before my latish lunch, so had only 10 km left to do in the afternoon. However those 10 km implied crossing Hossegor and Capbreton - by the time I came out on the other side I was heeartily tired of towns, people, cars and walking generally So when Jean-Marc suggested that he could pick me up when he finished work, I accepted without hesitation.

I sat on a wall without taking off my pack and then, for the first time in my life I was picked up by the police! A police van pulled up and a tall goodlooking policeman got out - Jean-Marc (we took the photos the following morning).

At home I met Cathy, an equally goodlooking woman, and daughter Alexandra, with whom I shared the room; but she went out for the evening - I never heard her come in. And son Vincent showed up on a two day leave from his work as "pompier de Paris".

The following morning Jean-Marc put me back on my path and half an hour later, still in the forest, a police van slowly drove past - but did not pick me up - I thought maybe Jean-Marc had sent them to keep an eye on me, but no, he hadn't....."

 *********************

"House made of wood."

I came across this beautiful house somewhere in 'Les Landes' - it houses a tourist office which was not open when I saw it. Just in case someone in France is interested, I photographed the advertisement which indicates the manufacturer."

About dunes - A propos des dunes

"Talking about dunes.

Nicole in Montalivet told me that, when they first came to Montalivet forty years ago, the sea at low tide was very far away and at high tide there was always plenty of beach left to play and sunbathe. Now it is never very far and at high tide it clearly 'eats' into the dunes - hence the importance of maintaining trees and vegetation generally on the dunes.

Even well inland, where the sand is laid bare, it moves across tracks and roads needing constant maintenance - in lots of places fencing has been set up to stop the dunes from 'swallowing' up the cycling tracks (see photo).

And Simone in Arcachon told me that the dune of Pyla regularly 'eats' into the gardens and houses situated too close to it."

********

grasshoppers - sauterelle

"Grasshoppers.

Did you know that grasshoppers can fly? I didn't. Whenever I have been trudging along under my umbrella in the searing heat on a long long road for miles in a straight line, the only way to survive was not to look ahead, but look at my feet. And there they were, all over the place, toing and froing over the surface of the track. And they hopped in zig-zag, which is when I realized that they have wings and do a peculiar combination of hopping and flying. Voila! Now you know!"

******

"Andrew and Mette.

As I was trudging along in the midday heat under the magic umbrella on over 10 km of straight road - nobody about but me - a young man with a heavily laden bike stopped next to me:'Would you please take my photo! Travelling alone I have lots of people on my photos but never myself.' So I took his photo as he cycled towards me. He is Andrew Leonard (as in Leonards Lee Garden?) from Leeds with a good solid northern accent as I appreciate after many a summer holiday spent in Manchester with my parents-in-law.

We talked a while - don't you feel lonely walking alone - no? I do and I wish I had someone to travel with! Just then a young woman cycled past, similarly laden plus a big casserole to top it all. Well, I said, if you do not want to be alone why not go after her - she looks nice too!

So off he went and I thought, again I had not taken a photograph! I started looking for a suitable picnic place and ten minutes later came to major intersection and there, lo and behold! there was Andrew talking to the nice girl - she is Dutch and called Mette. So I got a photo after all and disappeared into the wood for my picnic."

 *****************

Andrew and Mette.

"Gendarmes.

Somewhere in the forests - before I had definitely taken to the cycle tracks - I was trundling happily along under my magic umbrella on a lovely path. I came to a clearing and on the other side two figures in green emerged, on horseback - gendarmes! They looked as surprised seeing me emerging from the darkness of the path as I was seeing them. 'Tres pratique' I said in passing, pointing to my umbrella. 'Pas mal du tout' they answered and disappeared again into the forest.

I have had one young woman comment: 'Tres joli!'
And a man saying: 'Tres elegant!' He too was elegantly dressed for cycling!"

************************

Gendarmes

Contis or how to avoid the worst heat.

The day before yesterday I left fairly early, went at a good pace as it comes naturally when the morning is fresh and arrived at my camping much earlier than expected - the camping is situated about 2 km north of the small town of which it is the camping municipal (Ste. Eulalie-en-Born).

I arrived shortly after noon, started laying out the base of my tent and then decided to wait and see how the shadow on my lot moved with the advancing sun. It moved a lot and not the way I anticipated

Meanwhile I had inflated my matress and was sitting on the thing folded up against a tree, playing with my telephone (like any teenager!). In this way I waited for hours before I felt certain that my tent would not be in the sun (it is difficult to aerate). I had my lunch on the matress against the tree, I unfolded it and had my sieste under the tree and finally I set up the thing, had my shower, dinner and went to sleep for the night.

I got up at the crack of dawn, left early, walked at a good pace, took a wrong turning somewhere and again arrived at lunchtime. This was a hotel at Mimizan - they let you have your room at 2pm normally. However they had pity and let me in since my room was ready anyway. And I had my lunch and slept and slept...
(and played with the telephone!).

This morning again I left early, did 16 km in the course of the morning and stopped in the forest 2 km before getting to my camping ground. There I stayed for 4 hours(!), had lunch, my sieste, played with my telephone, and shifted my things about to keep up with the shifting shadows, just like the camping ground the other day, except that here I was on my own in lovely surroundings and did not provide entertainment for everybody.

So now with the weather being so hot, I do as much walking in the morning as I can which leaves plenty of time for resting...."

************

"Parentis-en-Born.

The day which brought me to Parentis was particularly hot and I had a particularly long stretch of cycling track in a straight line north to south next to a busy road with no shadow at all - apart from my magic umbrella which does provide shadow, but no air conditioning!
I had a reservation in the Hotel du Centre and the owner had insisted on giving me his mobile number in case I arrived between 15h and 17h, when the hotel would be closed.
Of course I arrived at 15h30 - dripping with perspiration! How glad I was that he came specially to let me in!
And since the hotel had a restaurant, I decided to treat myself to a proper meal. That was when suddenly he recognized me in my SNSM T-shirt: That is you, in the paper! I saw you in the paper! I'll send you the article!"

********

"SNSM Arcachon.

So Vincent, dressed "convenablement" in a shirt (but still barefoot), handed me over to our colleagues from Arcachon. I was so taken up by their arrival that I forgot to take a photograph - this happens quite often - I live in the moment, completely, and when I remember, it is to late: I spent all afternoon and evening with my hosts, Simone and Daniel, and remembered the photograph only when it was time to go to bed.

Back to Arcachon lifeboat: I was greeted by Daniel, Alain, Denis and Christian - goodbye to Vincent! As we were going across to Arcachon they explained the hazards of the "Bassin d'Arcachon" - vast sand banks with shifting sands, and abandoned, and therefore unmarked, oyster banks, apart from the usual boating troubles like engine failure.

On the other side a formidable reception was waiting for me - preceded by la presse - photographs were duly taken - and then we all embarged on one of my favourite activities: l'apero! Simone had gone out of her way to provide what she called: a reception worthy of their SNSM station. And so it was! An impressive number of people had shown up; amongst them the other two, who had offered to put me up, when I had sent out my call for help: Pierre and Bruno.
At one point even Eugene, the president of the station, came to greet me - I have to thank him for passing on my mail to the various members of the station!

More food over lunch with Simone and Daniel followed by a brief sieste and a guided tour of the area, including the Dune of Pyla (or Pilat) which is the highest dune (over 100m) in Europe. A most agreable evening over food, drink, and tales of travel in a campervan to far away places such as Kazakhstan. Photo session (see above) and bed The following morning Simone took me to a supermarket to look for the follow-up map and then put me back on my walking track.
What an experience the last two days had been! AND all the others before! I must admit that (apart from the pain I had in my foot) I am enjoying myself hugely - even the rain, if there is not too much of it, has its funny moments!

Talking about enjoying myself - you are right, PNFG (or some such thing) la vie est belle! Who are you anyway? Identify yourself a bit better!"

*************

Merci

SNSM CAP FERRET

SNSM Cap Ferret

"Vincent Pallet was the one who had spontaneously responded, when I had sent out my call for help in finding accommodation for the 24th July - in spite of the fact that that evening he and his wife Christine were celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary.

They live at Caouey on the Bassin d'Arcachon and their house is on the other side of the road from his mother's. His mother has somewhat lost her head and lives in an old peoples' home; but they take her out occasionally and on such occasions she sleeps in her house - this was such an occasion and I was put up there too.

Vincent picked me up on a supermarket parking lot - he was bare chested and bare foot, apparently his normal way of dressing in the summer - whiteness his blackened skin! When the guests were arriving Christine had to remind him that it was time to dress, so he put on a beautiful white linen shirt over what he was wearing and that was that.

A highlight of the evening was the arrival of one couple who brought as a present a donkey, a bale of straw and a sack of carrots. The donkey was the delight of the children and the following morning I heard Vincent's voice talking gently to the donkey as he was taking him - her rather, this is a female - to the field behind the house.

For our meal there was a sheep roasting on the spit Later there was dancing to a lot of very loud musik - as the neighbours were also invited, this did not matter.

At one point Granny too wanted to be on the dance floor - there she was, not really moving, because she cannot, but everybody was jumping about around her and once in a while someone took her by the hands and pretended to be dancing with her and she seemed very happy that way. Finally, after midnight, someone said: Ina, it is time you and Granny went to bed! And we were packed off to the big house on the other side of the street. That suited me nicely, because I am not used to staying up late and I had walked a long way that day.
The following morning I took the photographs which I could not take the evening before and Vincent took me to the Grand Pickey where I was to be picked up by the Arcachon lifeboat. Guess what he was wearing as he was getting into the car? Just Bermuda shorts - and Christine had to remind him that he should wear a shirt.

Christine says he puts her to shame - I like him that way, but then it is none of my business....."

 ***********************

So the voice materialized and turned out to be a substantial man (see photo) with a big smile which does not come out on the photo.

He works nights in a restaurant near the beach and needed to be off for work. Laure, his wife was not yet back from work - so Sylvain dropped me at the supermarket to buy what I needed for the following day or two. This is always a delicate matter - not too much (too heavy and might go off) and not too little - I have to maintain my strength after all - so far the reserve around the waist (the camel's hump!) has been maintained nicely.

After the shoppinging I met Nicole (remember, Montalivet!) in a Cafe - she brought my pack, gave me the receipt of the parcel she had sent and got me some moscito repellant - what a great help she has been!

The evening meal I had with Laure - again we got on immediately - and at 10pm we went to the restaurant where Sylvain works to celebrate his birthday! Voila - so far Laure and Sylvain!"

"Montalivet SNSM”.

So after a rhythm of 17, 24, 12, 27, and 17km, mostly with pack, sometimes without, I thought I was getting into an even pace doing 15 km to Soulac and again 15 to Montalivet. There I was received by Jeannot Peisino, president of the SNSM station, and his wife Nicole. The Montalivet station is not a lifeboat station, but a lifeguard station - there are no harbours around here, but endless beaches, no boating, but swimming and surfing. So the SNSM is responsable for all the lifeguard posts up and down the coast from Montalivet.

Nicole looked after me like a mother and when she closed the shutters of my (east-facing) room, that was my undoing: the following morning I slept til 9h! And I had wanted to be at the post office at 9h to post a number of things to lighten my pack! I found her sitting on the terrace with her breakfast, very pleased with herself, that she had managed to 'cheat' me in my planning - obviously I was in need of sleep! She kindly offered to post my things and to bring my pack to the next etappe when I arrived there in the evening.

That turned out to be an excellent idea: I had overlooked (and therefore not checked) that along that stretch of coast there is a long lake and for one place name you have three places - in this case Hourtin: Hourtin plage on the coast, Hourtin port on the lake and Hourtin, the town, even further inland, and my hosts lived in the town, which added 10 km to my walk and brought it up to 27 km!

And after having trudged along the main road for ages and was walking along a cycling track in relative comfort, a car came towards me in a cloud of dust and a voice called out to me: Ina! I have come to get you! I saw you on the main road with your umbrella and thought this must be Ina! And so I have
come to bring you home!"

Montalivet SNSM
